Current
and proposed activities of the Hilde Back Education Fund include:
• Awarding modest monetary scholarships to exceptionally
bright pupils in primary and secondary schools who are unable to
carry on with their studies due to financial problems
• Creating local resource centers where pupils
from poor families can access important school materials such as
text-books and also get free information regarding local and foreign
institutions of higher learning.
• Sponsoring activities that provide children
from poor families with the motivation to excel in their studies,
eg awarding trophies for pupils who come first in selected subjects
such as mathematics, English, science, or organizing writing competitions
in the rural areas.
• Providing special academic orientation and
encouragement to hardworking pupils, e.g. personal tutoring, to
enable them achieve their full potential
• Referring pupils who do not meet HBEF funding
criteria but who have a demonstrable need (e.g. AIDS orphans or
physically and mentally handicapped children) to other local and
international organizations that can provide needed assistance
• Contacting local and foreign benefactors who
can assist the needy children on individual sponsor-to-child scholarships
• Introducing children from disadvantaged communities
to skills hitherto beyond their access such as foreign languages,
computer, theater, music, poetry etc
• Mobilizing individuals and institutions with
interest in education to donate materials useful for the education
of disadvantaged children such as old computers, second-hand books,
music instruments etc.
• Linking up bright pupils with similar pupils
from schools in other parts of the world and encouraging mutually-beneficial
exchange programs through locally-based Embassies and other institutions
• Organizing motivational lectures by
successful community members in order to underscore the value of
education and create positive role models
