Education is a human right

  • FAQS

The power of a small act

At a time when I did not know whether I’d ever step in a high school, since my parents could not afford to pay my school fees, there came HBEF and renewed my hopes. HBEF paid my school fees and offered moral support. The Board Members have been friends and mentors to date. This opened the horizons that poverty had shunned. Was it not for HBEF intervention, I’ll probably be a jobless youth begging for hand-outs in my village just like my peers who were not lucky as I was to get a scholarship. Yet they too deserved a chance – if only someone was there to help. Today, a graduate and an accountant by professional, I am a testimony that education is a sure way to change the world. I will proactively drive this change. HBEF, you saved me! I will forever be grateful. – James Maicibu (James is currently working in Kigali, Rwanda, as an auditor)

As a veteran foreign correspondent, I have seen and grieved at the waste of children’s talent in the world’s poor countries. HBEF’s efforts to right this wrong are demonstrated by its many grants to boys and girls all across Kenya. Letters from my scholarship boy keep me in touch with his progress and HBEF staff adviseme about all new developments.I warmly recommend the Fund’s work and fully support its appeals for donors, sponsors, advocates, fund-raisers and volunteers. Learn About Sponsorship

Sponsoring a child through HBEF gives one the unique opportunity to experience the journey of lives being transformed over time and build a relationship through exchange of letters.

By making a monthly ($85), yearly ($1000), or one time gift totaling $4,000, you can give a Kenyan child the lasting gift of an education. To be matched to a child, one must sign up for sponsorship by submitting a completed commitment form and initiate payment. Details of child are provided once scholarships are awarded every beginning of the year Learn More

Know your way around

Does sponsorship allow me to be matched with an actual child?

It is possible to directly sponsor a needy child. The Sponsor to Child (STC) project is a core activity of HBEF in which a sponsor is assigned a specific student. Under this project, the sponsor commits to pay the child's education for 4 consecutive years (Form 1 to Form 4). The student, on his/her part, commits to work hard and attain their full academic potential.

What do I need to do to become a sponsor?

HBEF normally requests persons who wish to become sponsor to pay the annual sponsorship fee before the beginning of a sponsorship year as well as fill out and submit a HBEF “sponsor commitment pledge form” (available for download on our website).
