HBEF History

How it all begun . . .

Chris Mburu & Hilde BackThe Hilde Back Education Fund (HBEF) is a non-profit Organization founded in 2001 to support the education of talented children from poor families and disadvantaged communities in Kenya. Originally registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO), the fund has measurably grown and now provides scholarships, material, medical, leadership training and psychosocial support to needy, talented children at the Secondary School level. Additionally, the fund supports post-secondary beneficiaries to pursue further education in tertiary institutions and universities across Kenya.

HBEF was founded by Chris Mburu and other successful Kenyan professionals from Githunguri area as a give-back gesture to their community. Having attained academic and professional success they felt that it was important to give back to their community. From 2001 to 2009, the founding team funded HBEF’s activities primarily with their personal resources.

The Fund is named in honor and gratitude to Swedish benefactors who ran a charitable education initiative in Githunguri from 1969 through the 70s. One such benefactor, Hilde Back, sponsored Chris Mburu’s education in the 1970s under the Swedish Sponsorship Programme.

To date, HBEF has supported 350 children from across the eight (8) provinces of Kenya, access education at the secondary school level.
