The Hilde Back Education Fund (HBEF) is a non-profit Organization founded in 2001 to support the education of talented children from poor families and disadvantaged communities in Kenya. Originally registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO), the fund has measurably grown and now provides scholarships, leadership training and psychosocial support to needy, talented children at the Secondary School level. HBEF has since been registered as a Trust Fund.
HBEF was founded by Mr Chris Mburu and named after his benefactor Ms Hilde Back a German living in Sweden who had sponsored Chris education in the 1970s – 1980s in primary and secondary school and this enabled him to proceed to University of Nairobi and later to Harvard University and become a successful human rights lawyer. The work of HBEF is captured in the 2011 Emmy nominated documentary “A Small Act” (www.asmallact.com) – the story of Chris Mburu/ Founder HBEF founder and his benefactor Ms Hilde Back, a holocaust survivor who passed on in Sweden at the age of 98 year.
HBEF focus is ‘promotion of education as a fundamental human right’. The Fund gives support to bright but needy children who complete primary school education but are unable to join good secondary schools which they are admitted to due to financial constraints. This is through award of academic scholarships; regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.

Education is a Human right
The Sponsor-to-Child (STC) program is the Hilde Back Education Fund’s main program. It allows sponsors to assist the children and participate in their educational journey. Sponsors can contribute financially to the child’s education and can correspond with them, receiving updates such as report cards, pictures, and letters
The Hilde Back Education Fund developed the HBEF Leadership Training and Psychosocial Support program to help children overcome obstacles. They learn to focus on their studies while dealing with poverty. The program provides psychological support to the children to help them develop leadership and vital life skills.
The Right to Education Advocacy is an initiative that aims at sensitizing policymakers and raising awareness of the human right to a proper education. With this program in place, the goal is to create free education for all children in Kenya.
